The Feminist Karate Union began as a self-defense class for women taught by Py Bateman at the University of Washington in 1971. We are now a 501(c)(3) non-profit karate school for women and children. Our Chief Instructor is Sensei Aleeta Van Petten.
We teach shito-ryu, a traditional form of Japanese karate. The training program is structured so that each student can progress at her own rate. Students may attend as many classes during the week as they wish. One class each week is taught at the beginning level. New students are given individual instruction by advanced students in the mixed level classes. Once they have learned the basic techniques, students workout at their own level with other students in the class.
Our program includes physical conditioning, but students do not need to be in good shape to start training. Physical challenges can be adapted for, and should be discussed with an instructor. We are committed to working with any woman willing to train, regardless of her initial condition. As with any exercise program, if a student has doubts about her ability to participate due to injury or ailment, she should contact her health care practitioner.
The Feminist Karate Union is the Seattle chapter of the International Karate Federation of Sensei Chuzo Kotaka, based in Honolulu, Hawaii.
