Mission statement:

Training at the Feminist Karate Union emphasizes the following:
  • Teaching women and children self-defense and fighting skills to arm them against the ever-present threat of violence in our culture.
  • Offering an opportunity to compete in sport karate for women. This includes a commitment as an organization to strengthening the image of women in sport karate.
  • Using karate as a means for women and children to develop physical fitness, confidence, and pride in their bodies.
  • Maintaining the traditions of the art and integrating them into practice and character.

We train women and children (under age 12) exclusively because:
  • These groups are victimized disproportionately by adult men and need a supportive and safe place to learn self-defense.
  • Since many martial arts schools and other training facilities are available for, and primarily oriented to, training adult men, FKU reserves its limited time and resources to training those who do not have this opportunity.
  • One of the common effects of the oppression of women and children is self-consciousness and fear of physical inferiority in the presence of adult men. FKU provides an opportunity to develop physical skills in an environment free from that self-consciousness and fear.
  • The Feminist Karate Union, as an organization, actively supports the right of women and children to defend themselves against all forms of violence. FKU also actively supports women's right to participate freely and equally in sports, specifically sports karate. We endorse no other issues as a group.
  • FKU is committed to making karate training available to all women regardless of race, class, age, religion, sexual orientation, physical condition, financial status, ethinc origin, or political affiliation. FKU is committed to making karate training available to all children between 6 and 12 years of age regardless of race, class, religion, financial status, ethnic origin, or political affiliation. We reserve the right to refuse training to anyone who is deemed to present purposeful disruption or real danger to the school or its students.
